The 2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup's Fourth Round was full of surprises last night as two USL teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the competition.

 

The Rochester Raging Rhinos cruised to a 3-1 win over the MetroStars and the Minnesota Thunder both white washed the Rapids 4-1in the fourth round. PDL Des Moines Menace were no match for the Wizards as they fell to the defending U.S. Open Cup Champion 6-1. MLS Clubs D.C. United, Los Angeles Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas all won their match to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2005 U.S. Open Cup.

 

Match #27: San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) 2, Portland Timbers (USL 1) 0

The San Jose Earthquakes turned away the challenge from the USL First Division Portland Timbers, defeating them 2-0 at PGE Park. Wade Barrett gave the 'Quakes a 1-0 lead after 27 minutes, which the MLS side kept at halftime. Brian Mullan added an insurance goal midway thought the second half, as San Jose will advance to face thair MLS rivals, the Los Angeles Galaxy, in the Quarterfinals.

Match #28: Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS) 5, CD Chivas USA (MLS) 2

The latest edition of the Los Angeles "Super Classico" Started off hot, but eventually the Galaxy cooled things off on their way to a  5-2 win over CD Chivas USA. The MLS expansion club drew first blood on Douglas Sequeira's goal in the 4th minute, but Chivas didn't keep the lead for long. Galaxy vet Cobi Jones equalized in the 16th minute, but Chivas grabbed the lead right back on Ramon Ramizez's goal four minutes later. Besides the goals, play was a bit chippy as well, with each team accumulating two cautions each in the first 27 minutes. Los Angeles took a 3-2 lead into halftime on goals from Joseph Ngwenya and Herculez Gomez. The game was note truly decided until very late, when Landon Donovan and Paul Nagamura scored in the 89th minute, and in stoppage time respectively. The Galaxy will face MLS Rivals San Jose in the Quarterfinals on August 24.

Match #29: Rochester Raging Rhinos (USL-1) 3, 1 MetroStars (MLS) 1

The Rhinos showed why they have been one of the more successful USL clubs in the Open Cup, defeating the MetroStars 3-1 at Frontier Field. The Rhinos opened the scoring in the 20th minute, on Scott Palguta's header, which was passed to him by two headers from Tenywa Bonsue and Kirk Wilson.  Rochester doubled their score ten minutes later, as Mauro Carabajal finished a 30-yard run by slapping a shot off the hand of Metro 'keeper Zach Wells. A foul on Carabajal lead to the Rhinos final goal, when he was brought down by Seth Stemmler in the penalty area, resulting in a spot kick that was converted by Rene Rivas in the 57th minute. The Metros pulled back a consolation goal, on Sergio Galvan Rey's header off of a corner kick, but by then there was little doubt in the result. The Rhinos will now face the Chicago Fire at Frontier Field in the Quarterfinals on August 24.

Match #30: Kansas City Wizards (MLS) 6, Des Moines Menace (PDL) 1

The Cinderella run of the Des Moines Menace came to a crashing halt, losing to the defending US Open Cup champion Kansas City Wizards 6-1. The scoring started fast and furious, as Josh Wolff assisted Davy Arnaud in giving KC an early 1-0 lead in the 9th minute. However, Matt Wieland answered back for the Menace 4 minutes later. After that, the floodgates opened, and the Wizards scored five unanswered goals. Josh Wolf scored two of the goals, and assisted on another. Kansas City will face the USL First Division Minnesota Thunder in the Quarterfinals on August 24. The Menace meanwhile, still have their PDL Semifinals playoff match vs. the Orange County Blue Star to look forward too.

Match #31: Minnesota Thunder (USL-1) 4, Colorado Rapids (MLS) 1

It was the Melvin Tarley show at James Griffin Stadium, as the Liberian native netted four goals in the Thunder's 4-1 thrashing of the Colorado Rapids. The Thunder took a 1-0 lead into halftime, thanks to Tarley's first goal in the 38th minute. Tarley doubled Minnesota's lead shortly after half time on a Jay Albert assist. Colorado answered in the 69th minute, as Alain Nkong scored to pull the Rapids back within one. Tarley stuck the dagger in the heart of Colorado with his final two goals of the night, in the 72nd and 76th minutes. The four goals makes Tarley only the 5th player in the Professional era to score four or more goals, joining teammate Johnny Menyongar, who scored 4 in Minnesota's win over San Diego in 2002 in the 2nd Round. Minnesota will face defending Cup champions Kansas City Wizards in the Quarterfinals.

Match #32: D.C. United (MLS) 3, Richmond Kickers (USL 1) 1

Last year, the Richmond Kickers played rude hosts to D.C. United and Freddy Adu, defeating the MLS club 2-1. This time around, Adu and his club turned the tables, as the teen phenom scored early, and D.C. prevailed 3-1. Christian Gomez added two goals late in the second half to overcome the equalizer scored by Richmond's McColm Cephas in the 68th minute. D.C. will host FC Dallas at the Maryland Soccerplex in the Quarterfinals.

Match #33: FC Dallas (MLS) 3, Columbus Crew (MLS) 1 (aet)

The Columbus Crew took FC Dallas to extra time, but saw two players sent off, after which Dallas scored twice to win 3-1. The clubs traded goals seven minutes apart in the first half, Carey Talley scoring first for FC Dallas, and Kyle Martino answering for the Crew. The score stayed that way for the duration of regular time. near the end of the first half of extra time, the Crew were reduced to 9 men in a span of three minutes. Danny Szetela and Frankie Hejduk were sent off with straight red cards, giving FC Dallas a 2 man advantage that they quickly took advantage of. Abe Thompson scored first for Dallas in the extra session, at the 113th minute. Then, Eddie Johnson, making his return to FC Dallas, converted a penalty kick in the 116th minute to give FC Dallas the 3-1 victory. Dallas will face DC United in the Quarterfinals of the Open Cup in two weeks.

Match #34: Chicago Fire (MLS) 3, New England Revolution (MLS) 2 (aet)

The most successful MLS club in Open Cup history kept their reputation alive, defeating the New England Revolution 3-2 in extra time. Both clubs scored in the first half, Andy Herron for the Fire, and Shalrie Joseph for New England. The match moved on to extra time, where CJ Brown scored six minutes in to give Chicago a 2-1 lead. Andy Herron added his second goal of the game three minutes later to put the Fire up by two. Both teams saw players sent off in the extra stanza, both for their second cautions of the match. Jessie Marsch left the Fire short-handed in the 102nd minute, but Jay Heaps joined him on the sideline six minutes later. Andy Dorman pulled a goal back for the Revs in the final minute, but it was too little too late, as the Fire advance to fave the Rochester Raging Rhinos of the USL First Division in the Quarterfinals.

About Induction 2005
The National Soccer Hall of Fame will host Induction 2005 in Oneonta, New York on August 27th through the 29th. Induction Weekend kicks off on Saturday, August 27th with a Northern Eagle Beverage Pub Night starting at 7:00 p.m. Then on Sunday, August 28th the Hall of Fame will present the 2nd Annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament presented by Nike at the Delhi Golf Course in Delhi, New York. The Induction Ceremony on Monday, August 29th honors three of the most identifiable players in U.S. Men's National Team history and pioneers of Major League Soccer as Marcelo Balboa, John Harkes, and Tab Ramos will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame starting at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony is free of charge and open to the public and will take place in the Museum. The 2005 Hall of Fame Game will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. on August 29th and will feature four-time MLS Cup Champion D.C. United as they take on the Colorado Rapids.
