He began his first class career in the American Soccer League with the J&P
Coats team of Pawtucket in 1921 and was a member of their championship
winning team in the 1922-23 season. Later
he went on to play for Indiana Flooring, New York Nationals and New York
Giants before moving to Cleveland to play for Slavia. In 1929 he was a member of the Nationals team that won the
Lewis Cup. In 1930 he was selected to
play for the U.S. World Cup team and appeared in all three games in
Montevideo. Early in 1932 he was a member of the New York Giants team that
won the American Soccer League championship over New Bedford Whalers in a
memorable two game series. Four years
later while with Cleveland Slavia he was once against selected for the World
Cup team and played in Italy. One of Gallagher's greatest assets was
that he could play equally well at right half or outside right and was often
used with great effect in the latter position.
