Bill was one of the leading goal scorers in
American soccer during the 1950s, both for the U.S. National teams on
several levels and for the Kutis powerhouse from St. Louis. Looby played eight full international
games for the United States, and scored six goals in those games.

The first of those games was a World
Cup qualifier against Mexico in 1954, and the last a friendly against
England in 1959. Twice he scored
two goals for the United States in a full international, against Haiti in
a World Cup qualifier in 1954 and against Iceland in a friendly in
1955. He played for the United States
in World Cup qualifying in both 1954 and 1957. Looby's greatest exploits may have come at the amateur
level, however, as a star of the United States team that won the bronze
medal in the 1959 Pan-American Games in Chicago. That Pan-Am Games team featured a
forward trio of Looby, and Hall of Famers
Ed
Murphy
and
Al Zerhusen who
combined to score 24 goals in six games. Looby had six of those goals. He also played for the United States in the 1956 Olympic Games in
Australia (plus the U.S. team's long pre-Olympic Asian tour) and the
qualifying round of the 1960 Olympic Games. Looby played for teams
sponsored by the Kutis Funeral Home as early as 1950, and was a key
member of the team throughout its run of national cup victories. He played in the final of each of
Kutis' six consecutive victories in the National Amateur Cup from 1956 to
1961. And in 1957, he scored
goals in both legs of Kutis' victory over New York Hakoah in the two-game
U.S. Open Cup final.
