He returned to the U.S. at the age of 19 and went to live in Cincinnati, but shortly after was drafted into the army, and as fate would have it, posted to Germany. Represented the United States in the qualifying rounds of the 1958, 1962 and 1966 World Cups and played in the final rounds of the 1956 Olympics in Australia and the qualifying rounds for the 1960 Olympics. On the way to Australia, he scored 17 goals in nine games as the U.S. team toured South-East Asia. Starred in the bronze medal winning U.S. team at the 1959 Pan-American Games, where he scored 10 goals in six games. Captain of the Los Angeles Kickers for 10 years, including teams that won the National Open Cup in 1958 and 1964.
