Sam
moved
to the Boston area with his parents at the age of four and
first played soccer at O.W. Holmes Junior High School in
Boston.

Signed an
amateur form with the Clan Robertson Club of the Boston and
District League at the age of 17. Center half and playing
manager of the Revere Corinthians from 1924 to 1941, during
which time he played in the 1928 Olympic trial in St. Louis. Organized and served as president of the Bay State
League from 1924 to 1936. In addition from 1923 to 1970 presided over the Eastern
Massachusetts League, Inter-City League, Boston and District
League, Massachusetts State League and the New England League. Also in later years secretary, treasurer and
registration chairman of the Northern Massachusetts and New
Hampshire State Association. He also coached at Revere High School and Brandeis
University and was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the
National Soccer Coaches Association in 1964. However, despite all of this Sam will forever be
known as the man who was the Historian of the United States
Soccer Federation from 1972 to 1994 and a prime mover in the
establishment of the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta,
New York in 1979. He
also founded the Society for American Soccer History.
