Lawrence E. Briggs


Larry graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1927 and soon after became the universities first soccer coach, a position he held for 37 years.

Died: December 20, 1970

As professor of physical education at U-Mass he also coached many other sports with great success. A founder member of the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League, he served as that organization's secretary for four years, joined the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in its first year and was NSCAA president in 1947. He was also the moving force behind the formation of the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials of America (NISOA).

42 Years Soccer Coach at University of Massachusetts. 1942 Helped organize Pioneer Valley ISOA. 1945 Developed Dual System of Officiating. 1947‑50 Secretary‑Treasurer Pioneer Valley ISOA. 1953 NSCAA Honor Award. 1955 Coordinated New England Regional Clinics for Coaches and Referees. 1957 Formed New England ISOA. 1959‑60 Coordinator Referee Evaluation System. 1960‑64 Revised College Rule Book Format. 1963 Considered the "Father of NISOA". Established First Referee  Assignment Committee for Soccer Officials. 1964 Developed First Soccer Officiating Mechanics Film. 1967 NISOA Honor Award. 2001 NISOA Hall of Fame Inductee. 1968 NEISOA Life Member.
