Robert Guelker


Bob was the coach who built St. Louis University into the greatest national power that collegiate soccer has known, winning NCAA titles in 1959, 1960, 1962, 1963 and 1965.

Coach at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville from 1966 to 1983, finishing his 27 years of collegiate coaching with a record of 311-76-26 and NCAA titles in 1972 and 1979. Led his teams to 22 NCAA tournament bids.  President of the United States Soccer Football Association from 1967 to 1969. Coach of the U.S. Olympic soccer team in Munich in 1972. Coach of the Pan-American team in 1971. First USA Youth coach in CONCACAF (U19). Among many administrative contributions, served as Chair of the National Junior Cup Competition Committee, USSF Olympic Development Committee, Missouri Soccer Federation, and Missouri Senior Soccer Association. Served as Executive Secretary for the Catholic Youth Council, Archdiocese of St. Louis from 1946 to 1969. NSCAA Coach of the Year in 1973, and Honor Award recipient in 1978. Named “Soccer Coach of the Year” by the Rockne Club in 1959. Sports Illustrated Award for Merit in 1973. Soccer America’s Coach of the Year, 1980.
